(S01E09) "Do you remember what happened to Gloria that day? Because I do. We both have our secrets, Bun. I'll keep yours if you keep mine." - Darryl

Well, darn. As I mentioned last week, Eastwick keeps getting better and better. This week's episode was the best yet! Funny, dramatic, good characters, and some tense action at the end. And the best part is that the witches are finally realizing their powers and using them for good. If the series continued, we might see that they'd be tempted to use their powers for more nefarious purpose.

We also saw Darryl get a little more evil-ish with Bun. It made me realize that perhaps he's not the gadabout town guy who just loves women and being a big-shot. Then again, maybe he's not as bad a guy as I think (see above quote).
Continue reading Review: Eastwick - Tasers and Mind Erasers

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: Nip/Tuck - Lola Wlodkowski

Filed under: OpEd, Nip/Tuck, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free

(S06E08) "Do I need to start smoking again?!" - Kimber

With only two new episodes left in season six of Nip/Tuck (although, season seven does start right up again in January), I feel pretty confident in saying that "Lola Wlodkowski" will probably go down as the best of this penultimate season's 10 episodes.

For the most part, it stood alone in terms of plot and only loosely tied into the season's overarching arcs. Instead, it provided what was arguably one of the series' best takes on what beauty is while at the same time, reaffirming the differences between Sean and Christian. And other rock icons, too. It was all part of Adam's appeal. But now that he's promoting his new CD and did a "scandalous" performance at the American Music Awards, he's really getting the Elvis treatment. There's fear that his actions, which are more graphic than anything Elvis ever did, will go too far.

Today, Adam tweeted that ABC had cancelled two more spots on the network -- his upcoming Jimmy Kimmel Live! date and a New Year's Eve performance. Adam added that nobody should blame ABC for the cancellations because it was pressure from the FCC that prompted ABC's action. So maybe we should really be blaming Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake for the infamous Super Bowl breast/costume malfunction? ABC previously dumped Adam from Good Morning America.
Continue reading ABC drops Adam Lambert again and again

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: The Middle - Siblings

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, OpEd, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free

(S01E09) Every parent wants their kids to get along. It makes things more peaceful in the house, and you can feel like you must be doing something right. Unfortunately, it doesn't always work out that way. The Heck children are so vastly different in personalities that the three of them bonding naturally is virtually impossible.

Sue is a bit of a dork, Axl is the cool kid and, as mentioned, Brick is ... Brick.

But that's not going to stop Frankie from trying, and dragging Mike along to support her. I'm glad to see Mike's honesty trait remaining strong as he supports his wife while admitting to his kids he has no idea what she's doing or why. And while her efforts didn't necessarily work at first, Mike found a way to bring the kids together. Too bad it was exhausting for the parents.
Continue reading Review: The Middle - Siblings

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

ESPN sets record with Monday's Saints-Pats game

Filed under: Sports, OpEd, Celebrities, Ratings, Reality-Free
On Monday night, ESPN had one of the best NFL match ups of the season -- the undefeated New Orleans Saints versus perennial powerhouse New England Patriots. The game was, perhaps, a preview of the Super Bowl because it's entirely possible that the Saints and the Pats could make it through the playoffs to the ultimate game.

Well, without much more than the usual hype, ESPN's Monday Night Football got the huge audience this kind of contest warrants. It was the second most-watched cable program of all time. Yes, you read that correctly. The second most-watched cable program of all time. Over 20 million total viewers -- 21.4 million -- tuned in to watch the game... which turned out to be a bit of a dud. But that doesn't matter to ESPN because they scored big time.
Continue reading ESPN sets record with Monday's Saints-Pats game

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: Friday Night Lights - The Son

Filed under: OpEd, Friday Night Lights, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free

(S04E05) When you see an episode like this one, you feel bad that Friday Night Lights has been flying under the radar when it comes to Emmy consideration. The performance by Zach Gilford as Matt was the best I've seen on TV since Aaron Paul blew me away with Breaking Bad last summer. Hopefully someone will remember him next year when it's Emmy time, and this is the show that could win it for him. He was just that good. More after the jump on Matt, Vince, Becky and the other Dillon denizens.
Continue reading Review: Friday Night Lights - The Son

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: Glee - Mattress

Filed under: OpEd, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free, Glee

(S01E12) While they were in there, I told 'em to go ahead and yank out those tear ducts. Wasn't usin' 'em." - Sue Sylvester

I wouldn't say this is the best Glee episode we've had, but it had some good moments, and of course, that big reveal, which we'll talk about after the jump. The mattress scene was a nice little number, but I wasn't familiar with the song performed by Rachel and Finn, so that didn't do as much for me.

Sue Sylvester was back to true form from her compassionate scene with her sister a few episodes ago. It's hard to believe she'd have that much feeling for her sister, and yet still be a big you-know-what in the rest of her life. Glee breaks down stereotypes in some cases, but I'm not sure Sue falls into that category. She still seems like a caricature to me.
Continue reading Review: Glee - Mattress

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: Top Chef - Season Finale: Part 1

Filed under: Food/Home/DIY, OpEd, Episode Reviews, Top Chef
(S06E14) Well, if you think this competition was getting easier, forget it. This is the toughest Top Chef I can remember. These final four were all excellent and as they gathered for the last leg to the finale, you could see that it was game on.

Unlike other seasons, there aren't any obvious villains in this group. Who are you rooting for? I don't know. I like them all in some ways, and yet there isn't a clear favorite either.

I like Kevin, but the Voltaggio brothers have been excellent, too. Their food really does look good enough to eat! And Jen, for all her insecurities, has been great throughout. Tonight would be a close call. (S06E20) I go into these elimination shows expecting a lot of pad and filler. But when it's a dance show, I want to see dancing; which is why I'm always a little perplexed when musical guests who don't dance show up. This week's musical guest was Snoop Dogg, and I really enjoyed it. And yes, I know that Snoop does little more than bounce and swagger.

It was that either he or the producers were smart about how to put together his stage show. Hip-hop videos are known for dancing, so why not bring that dancing to the live show? Joining Snoop on stage was Quest, a former winner of America's Best Dance Crew, as well as the dance home for three former SYTYCD contestants: Ryan, Dominic and Hok.

What about the results, though? I was surprised that even though we've switched to voting for individual dancers, it was still two couples from last night's performance show that wound up in the bottom.
Continue reading Review: So You Think You Can Dance - Top 8 Revealed

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Big Bang Theory meets the Wonder Years

Filed under: OpEd, Celebrities, Casting, Reality-Free, The Big Bang Theory
Does it take a brainiac to play a brainiac? No, of course not. But when Danica McKellar guests on The Big Bang Theory on January 11, that's what they'll get. Not only is Danica well-remembered as the nearly-perfect Winnie Cooper on The Wonder Years, Kevin's neighbor and the girl he always adored, she's also smart as a whip. She has the degrees to prove it.

A couple of years ago, TV Squad put Danica In the Limelight. Ryan learned that Danica had graduated Summa cum Laude from UCLA with a degree in Mathematics. She is the McKellar in the Chayes-McKellar-Winn Theorem.
Continue reading Big Bang Theory meets the Wonder Years

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

A&E's Hoarders is a record-breaker

If your garage looks like this picture, you may have a bit of a problem. The fact that this is somebody's kitchen means they have a BIG problem. This is an image from A&E's hit series Hoarders. I can't even fathom how somebody puts so much stuff into a kitchen to make it look like that, but I assume they're not doing any cooking on that stove or opening that refrigerator.

Hoarders has become a sensation on A&E. Monday night's season two premiere of Hoarders was a record breaker. More people watched it than any other A&E season opener ever -- 3.2 million viewers. That was more viewers than Intervention, which has been A&E's big drawer.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Martha sits in with the gals on Whatever, Martha

Filed under: Food/Home/DIY, OpEd, Celebrities, Reality-Free
When Whatever, Martha! was first conceived and I wrote about it, I was doubtful that the show would succeed in really ripping Martha. I thought they're comparing the comedy to Mystery Science Theater 3000 in the press release was setting the bar too high and they would fall on their faces. Well, guess what? They were right and I was wrong. Whatever, Martha! works and it is very funny.

Things should get really interesting on the show when the butt of the jokes -- Martha herself -- appears on Whatever, Martha! tonight, Wednesday, December 2. On Fine Living.

Martha will be on with the stars, Jennifer Koppelman Hutt and Alexis Stewart, to dish about classic clips from Martha Stewart Living.
Continue reading Martha sits in with the gals on Whatever, Martha

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Barrowman signed for Torchwood season four

Filed under: OpEd, Doctor Who, Casting, Reality-Free
John Barrowman, best known as Captain Jack Harkness on the Doctor Who spinoff Torchwood, has confirmed that he has signed to play the character again in the series' fourth season. Unlike the mini-series of the third season, Barrowman claims that the fourth will have a full 13-episode run.

Given that the majority of the cast was killed off during seasons two and three, this would represent a good opportunity for Russell T. Davies and whichever other creators are involved to re-invent the series. Whether the new series will involve the newest Doctor Matt Smith is anybody's guess, however given Davies' departure from the source program (which, granted, was amicable) and his likely desire to similarly remove Torchwood from Doctor Who continuity as much as possible, I doubt it.

So here we have Captain Jack returning to Earth and assembling a new team. Will Gwen be involved as well, child in tow? Are you looking forward to a new season of Torchwood?

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Ugly Betty is moving from Friday night after all

Filed under: Other Drama Shows, Programming, OpEd, Ratings, Reality-Free
Did someone at ABC hear my plea for Ugly Betty... or read my post from the other day about how the show was being left to shrivel and die on Friday nights? Perhaps so because today's Hollywood Reporter claims that ABC will move Ugly Betty to Wednesday at 10 p.m. in the spot currently occupied by Eastwick.

Hey, that's what I was advocating. It just makes sense. Eastwick is playing out the string. It's not coming back. ABC has decided to burn off the remaining episodes, but it can do that anywhere on the schedule... even on Friday nights.

But Ugly Betty deserves a chance to come back to the glory days when it was competitive in the ratings. Notice I didn't say it was a Nielsen winner; it never really was. But it was in there trying and it was an award-winning show so that made it all right. It was a trade-off for ABC.
Continue reading Ugly Betty is moving from Friday night after all

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: The Biggest Loser - Week 12

Filed under: OpEd, The Biggest Loser, Episode Reviews
(S08E12) As we all learned in the last episode, last week was the contestant's last week on the Biggest Loser Ranch. Now, it was time to face the real world once again as the final four contestants headed home for 60 days. Then, it would be back to the ranch for one final weigh-in to determine which two contestants were guaranteed spots in the finale next week, and which two would have to plead for America to vote them in as the third finalist.
The episode was framed and put together very nicely as a showcase for all the hard work Rudy, Danny, Amanda and Liz have put in during their time on the Ranch, and how much they've each grown and changed from this experience. It served as a retrospective of the season, in part, as well as an affirmation that the work this show is doing can change lives.
Continue reading Review: The Biggest Loser - Week 12

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: So You Think You Can Dance - Top 10 Perform

Filed under: OpEd, Episode Reviews, So You Think You Can Dance
(S06E19) What an amazing and jam-packed night of dance. With ten couple dances and ten solos, it was wall-to-wall performances. Amazingly, almost every single one of the performances was excellent.

Honestly, I am so impressed with this entire Top 10, I can't say enough good things about them. Sonya Tayeh finally blew me away as a choreographer. Working with Ellenore is a match made in heaven for both of them, really.
In fact, if you go back to the spring, you can add Better Off Ted to Cougar Town, The Middle and Modern Family.

Why then would ABC be giving Nicole Richie a new sitcom? I just don't see where she's worthy of a show, let alone that she has the star appeal or talent to carry a situation comedy.

Perhaps ABC has some take on The Simple Life star that I'm missing. She's cute, yes. She's not a complete airhead judging by what I've seen of her on talk shows. But, really, aren't there better actresses -- stars -- who are more viable for a new comedy series? Stars will more talent than celebrity to their credit.
Continue reading Why is ABC giving Nicole Richie a situation comedy?

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: Lie to Me - Fold Equity

Filed under: OpEd, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free, Lie to Me

(S02E09) "She's the female equivalent of roulette and you like the view." - Foster

There's always a potential for screw-ups when networks start airing episodes out of the producers intended order (see NBC and their goofs with Detective Crosetti's death in season three of Homicide), but Lie to Me seems to have avoided that sort of miscalculation despite FOX's shuffling of the season order. That is, until "Fold Equity" aired last night. Originally set to air during Fox's Simpsons week (catch the Sideshow Bob reference?), "Fold Equity" didn't drop the ball on anything as major as a character's death, but more than once during the hour it felt as though we were taking some giant steps backward.
Continue reading Review: Lie to Me - Fold Equity

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Peter Bergman celebrates 20 years on The Young and the Restless

Filed under: OpEd, Daytime, Video, Celebrities, Emmys, Reality-Free
Where has the time gone? Is it really 20 years that Peter Bergman's played Jack Abbott on The Young and the Restless? Amazing, but true. Not only has Bergman been tearing it up as Jack for two decades, he's pretty much eradicated the memory of his tenure on All My Children where he was nice guy, Dr. Cliff Warner. Say what you will about Jack, he's not a nice guy. He can have his good moments, but this character is too complicated, too selfish, too diabolical ever to be confused with a noble man like Cliff.

Which is what has made Peter Bergman's time on Y&R so remarkable! The character had been so sharply defined by Terry Lester that it was going to be tough for any actor to take over the part.
Continue reading Peter Bergman celebrates 20 years on The Young and the Restless

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Bob's Burgers heading to Fox

Filed under: Programming, OpEd, Animation, Pickups and Renewals, Reality-Free
From the creator of Home Movies comes a new animated show on Fox. Bob's Burgers will be about a guy (Bob) who runs a burger grill at an East Coast seaside town with his "tightly wound wife and three unhelpful kids".

Fox is obviously returning to form with another animated family comedy, as if their entire Sunday night line-up weren't enough. I yearn for animated shows that dare to be a little different like South Park, Futurama and The Venture Bros.

However, the show involves hamburgers and as a hamburger fan I may give it a shot. It is a bit of a concern that Fox is overdoing it with the animated shows. Perhaps Cartoon Network and Fox should just switch names and be done with it.

Also, based on the photo doesn't the main character look a little like Luigi from the Mario Brothers? Will he have a thick Italian accent as well?

Permalink | Email this | | Comments
