And how could it not? Somehow Michael Scott got himself into a situation that transcended mere embarrassment. He made a promise that he couldn't keep, and it affected a lot of lives.

"Of all the empty promises I've made, this is by far the most generous," Michael said, and he was right. The whole time I was watching the Scott's Tots storyline play out, I was cringing, waiting for the moment of truth. But, surprisingly enough, things didn't turn out as bad as we thought. And for that, we have Erin to thank.
Continue reading Review: The Office - Scott's Tots

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

How much saturated fat is in the NBC/Comcast deal?

Some people think the Comcast takeover of NBC is so unhealthy that they have created their own nutritional information of the deal.

The nonprofit media organization, FreePress, has compiled a list of the potential for customer costs, voice diversity and media control when the deal finally goes through. If the numbers are as accurate as the group claims, they are pretty sobering. Don't read it, posted after the jump, while you're watching TV or you might break it in a fit of rage.

You wouldn't read the nutritional chart at McDonald's while you're biting into a big juicy Double Quarter Pounder, would you?
Continue reading How much saturated fat is in the NBC/Comcast deal?

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies mini-series just a rumor

Filed under: Other Drama Shows, Pickups and Renewals, Reality-Free
Apparently the news of a zombie invasion on your TV screen was just a work of fiction.

Earlier, we reported on the production of a six-part mini-series based on the hilarious (I've just started reading it, Jane Austen was never this funny) Pride and Prejudice and Zombies book by Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith by a British production company. Today the co-author of the book, who has a second mashup title in the works based on the life of Abraham Lincoln as a hard-edged vampire hunter, denied the news. And if you have to ask which author, please have your head examined by something other than a can opener and a very good friend.

The "living" author wrote on his Twitter page, "there's NO TRUTH to those PPZ 'miniseries' rumors" and noted on his Facebook page that efforts are being made to produce the series as a theatrical film. Sigh, I guess the only time we'll get to see anything zombie-related on our TVs is footage of the inevitable religious apocalypse.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Olbermann lights the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree

If you're wondering who actually flicked the switch for the always impressive Rockefeller Center Christmas tree, you might be surprised or violently angry depending on your personal opinions.

MSNBC's professional right-wing pundit impressionist Keith Olbermann lit the tree during last night's episode of Countdown while dishing on Tiger Woods' series of trysts with gossip monger Michael Musto like a couple of housewives in a beauty parlor with baritone voice. Olbermann officially ushered in Christmas with a switch that looks like he raided the trash bin after NBC dismantled the Family Feud set. Then without missing a beat, the two jump right back into the Tiger trashing.

TVTattle has compiled a smart series of stories on exactly what the deal could mean to you, the viewer. For instance, Comcast, a cable company, may have purchased NBC to "devalue" free TV, much in the same way Judge Doom from Who Framed Roger Rabbit? bought the Red Car company so he could "dismantle it" to run his freeway through Toontown. And if you British literature snobs can think of a better metaphor, be my guest.

There is also talk that Comcast might drop the NBC brand. Does that mean the company will also take out the NBC peacock Ol' Yeller style?

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Rudolph the Ratings Bully beats ABC, NBC, and FOX

This is the kind of TV ratings news that warms my heart: last night's airing of Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer on CBS was the most-watched show of the entire night on any of the other networks, including Christmas in Rockefeller Center, So You Think You Can Dance, The Middle, The Grammy Nominations Concert, and Glee.

The Rankin/Bass Christmas special with the dentist elf and random misfit toys grabbed an impressive 10.7 million viewers.

That's pretty good for a 45 year-old animated special that we've all seen 97 times (and probably own on DVD), no? There's something amazingly comforting about that: the same Christmas specials (Rudolph, Santa Claus Is Coming To Town, It's A Wonderful Life, A Charlie Brown Christmas, etc) are pulled out every single year and we still watch them. It's the sort of television comfort food that we can't resist.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

David Cross and Will Arnett reunite for new UK series

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, Video, Celebrities, Reality-Free
OK, so it's not Arrested Development, but the new Channel 4 show The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret does have both David Cross and Will Arnett, and from this clip of the pilot it seems like something AD fans could get into. Arnett's character doesn't seem to far removed from his 30 Rock character. Amber Tamblyn plays Cross' girlfriend.
He hasn't take the job yet, but if he does he will replace Diane Sawyer, who we told you was going to take over for Charles Gibson when he vacates the anchor chair on World News. Gibson's last day will be Friday, December 18 and Sawyer's first day will be on Monday, December 21.

Part of the negotiations between Stephanopolous and the network revolve around the Sunday morning show he does now, This Week. He wants to keep that gig too while he works Monday through Friday on GMA. If he decides not to take the job for some reason, then current host Chris Cuomo could get the job (it must be odd to be the second choice even though you've done the exact job for a while). Whoever gets the spot will be co-host along with Robin Roberts.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Sneak Peek: next week's season premiere of Better Off Ted

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, Video, Reality-Free
Actually, two sneak peeks. I'm so glad ABC renewed this show. The season premiere airs next Tuesday at 9:30.

It'll take about a year to go through the regulatory and anti-trust gauntlets, but after that, the cable giant will be in charge.

Everyone makes fun of NBCU because of the NBC's bumbling high-profile moves over the last half-decade or so, but the reason why the company was so attractive to Comcast was not the broadcast network, but its über-successful cable networks, especially Bravo and USA. Still, it's embarrassing to have your flagship net stumble around like a disoriented shopper on Black Friday. So, if I were in the Comcast executive suite, here's a few things I'd do to prop up the Peacock:
Continue reading Five changes Comcast should make to NBC

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Neil Patrick Harris is Frosty the Inappropriate Snowman

Filed under: Video, Animation, How I Met Your Mother, Celebrities, Reality-Free
This looks like something a fan made up on the web but it was actually created by CBS.
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, the wildly popular adaptation of Jane Austen's famous novel infused with kick-ass zombie action by writer Seth Grahame-Smith, is being made into a six-part TV mini-series. Groovy! Is there any chance they could convince Keira Knightley to don the frock one more time and pick up a kitana for some serious Elizabethan ass kicking?

The series hasn't scored a network or even a start date since the production has barely made its way out of its egg shell, but the project seems promising so far. Deadline Productions is at the ship's helm who produced a very quirky looking science-fiction cop series called Phoo Action for the BBC. Make sure you wait at least one hour after taking your ecstasy before viewing the trailer.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: Eastwick - Tasers and Mind Erasers

Filed under: Other Drama Shows, OpEd, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free

(S01E09) "Do you remember what happened to Gloria that day? Because I do. We both have our secrets, Bun. I'll keep yours if you keep mine." - Darryl

Well, darn. As I mentioned last week, Eastwick keeps getting better and better. This week's episode was the best yet! Funny, dramatic, good characters, and some tense action at the end. And the best part is that the witches are finally realizing their powers and using them for good. If the series continued, we might see that they'd be tempted to use their powers for more nefarious purpose.

We also saw Darryl get a little more evil-ish with Bun. It made me realize that perhaps he's not the gadabout town guy who just loves women and being a big-shot. Then again, maybe he's not as bad a guy as I think (see above quote).
Continue reading Review: Eastwick - Tasers and Mind Erasers

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

World goes nuts because the President preempts A Charlie Brown Christmas

It's official: President Barack Obama has officially ruined Christmas.

Pundits and TV viewers from up and down the dial are calling out President Obama for airing his big speech on the troop surge in Afghanistan and preempting ABC's airing of the classic Christmas cartoon A Charlie Brown Christmas. If this causes a move for impeachment, I may never awake from my laughter coma.
Not only was the story the top headline on yesterday morning's Drudge Report, but the pundits really jumped in to turn the President into their own personal Scrooge.
Continue reading World goes nuts because the President preempts A Charlie Brown Christmas

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Did NBC's Christmas in Rockefeller Center seem a little surreal to you?

Filed under: Music and Variety, Watercooler Talk, Reality-Free
So we didn't have any major walkout or cutting of the electricity during the live broadcast of the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting on NBC last night. But we did have enough things to talk about the day after.

I could discuss the lip synching that a lot of the acts decided to do (I'm looking at you, Barry Manilow) and point out just how bad Rod Stewart is at doing either old standards or soul songs. But I really want to talk about Jane Krakowski. She hosted (along with Chuck's Zachary Levi) and it was a little...surreal.

This was a variety show that wasn't too different than a special TGS that the 30 Rock gang might put on, and it almost seemed like it was Jenna Maroney hosting. Krakowski basically plays a really exaggerated version of herself on 30 Rock, and I was waiting for her to say something clueless or potentially racist or have a cat jump on her face and scratch her.
Continue reading Did NBC's Christmas in Rockefeller Center seem a little surreal to you?

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: Nip/Tuck - Lola Wlodkowski

Filed under: OpEd, Nip/Tuck, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free

(S06E08) "Do I need to start smoking again?!" - Kimber

With only two new episodes left in season six of Nip/Tuck (although, season seven does start right up again in January), I feel pretty confident in saying that "Lola Wlodkowski" will probably go down as the best of this penultimate season's 10 episodes.

For the most part, it stood alone in terms of plot and only loosely tied into the season's overarching arcs. And other rock icons, too. It was all part of Adam's appeal. But now that he's promoting his new CD and did a "scandalous" performance at the American Music Awards, he's really getting the Elvis treatment. There's fear that his actions, which are more graphic than anything Elvis ever did, will go too far.

Today, Adam tweeted that ABC had cancelled two more spots on the network -- his upcoming Jimmy Kimmel Live! date and a New Year's Eve performance. Adam added that nobody should blame ABC for the cancellations because it was pressure from the FCC that prompted ABC's action. So maybe we should really be blaming Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake for the infamous Super Bowl breast/costume malfunction? ABC previously dumped Adam from Good Morning America.
Continue reading ABC drops Adam Lambert again and again

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

You can't go wrong with TV's SpongeBob gifts for kids

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, Animation, Children, Reality-Free
"Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? Popularly licensed and profitable is he!"

That's not how the SpongeBob SquarePants theme song goes, but the statement is factually correct. The Nickelodeon yellow legend is still immensely popular across various age ranges. And that gives you some easy gift ideas for kids in and around your family.

Rather than merely give the kid in question a stuffed sponge for the holidays, you can dig a little deeper and offer up a couple Spongebob board games from Hasbro for less than $25 each.

The SpongeBob SquarePants Edition of "Kid Cranium" mixes up artistic activities with a trivia-based board game to let kids express themselves while they kick your grown-up butt.
Continue reading You can't go wrong with TV's SpongeBob gifts for kids

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: The Middle - Siblings

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, OpEd, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free

(S01E09) Every parent wants their kids to get along. It makes things more peaceful in the house, and you can feel like you must be doing something right. Unfortunately, it doesn't always work out that way. The Heck children are so vastly different in personalities that the three of them bonding naturally is virtually impossible.

Sue is a bit of a dork, Axl is the cool kid and, as mentioned, Brick is ... Brick.

But that's not going to stop Frankie from trying, and dragging Mike along to support her. I'm glad to see Mike's honesty trait remaining strong as he supports his wife while admitting to his kids he has no idea what she's doing or why. And while her efforts didn't necessarily work at first, Mike found a way to bring the kids together. Too bad it was exhausting for the parents.
Continue reading Review: The Middle - Siblings

Permalink | Email this | | Comments
